Ketogenic or Keto Diets, what are they really?

 Ketogenic Diets

I'm sure most of us have heard something about these diets, but don't know or haven't really taken time to find out what they are and how beneficial they are.

Well, a Ketogenic diet or Keto diet is a very low carbohydrate, high fat diet. This diet are mainly used for weight loss.

To achieve positive results, this diet has to be very low in carbohydrates, high in dietary fat and include a moderate amount of dietary proteins.

This reduction in carbohydrates puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis, when this happens your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy.

Ketogenic diet can cause massive reduction in blood sugar, insulin levels and help with weight loss

Low Carbohydrates Why?

Some people assert that these diets raise cholesterol and cause heart disease due to their high fat content, but contrary to these assertions, most scientific studies prove that low carbohydrate diets are healthy and beneficial.

Some of the benefits include:

A reduction in appetite -Studies consistently show that when people cut carbohydrates and eat more fats and protein, they end up eating fewer calories,

Quicker weight loss -  This is because low carbohydrates diets act to rid excess water from your body, lowering insulin levels and leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two,

A greater proportion of fat loss from the abdominal cavity- Low carbohydrate diets are very effective at reducing this harmful abdominal fat. In fact, a greater proportion of the fat people lose on low carbohydrate diets seems to come from the abdominal cavity.

Those are some of the many benefits of this diet

High Fat Why?

I'm sure most of you are highly skeptical as in how a diet high in dietary fat  can actually make you lose weight?
Well not to worry, the explanation is actually very simple.

As mentioned in the introductory paragraph  above, the Keto diet is designed to make your body enter a state where it starts relying on fat rather than carbohydrates for energy hence burning fat more efficiently.

What is Dietary Fat

Dietary fat refers to the fats and oils found naturally in animal and plant foods, and those used in cooking, at the table, and added to processed foods.

Dietary fat is made up of fatty acids. There are two types of fatty acids: saturated and unsaturated. Fats are called saturated or unsaturated depending on how much of each type of fatty acid they contain. For example, butter is a saturated fat because it has mainly saturated fatty acids. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat because it has mainly unsaturated fatty acids.

Saturated fats are solid at room temperature while unsaturated fats are liquid.
Unsaturated fats are considered the healthiest type of dietary fat.

Why is fat important?

Dietary fat provides energy, and helps with nutrient absorption and brain and nerve function. Some unsaturated fatty acids are essential nutrients. This means that we need to get them from food because our bodies can't make them. Fats and oils also add flavour and texture to the foods and make you fee full for longer.

  Why moderate amounts of Protein?

Dietary protein is necessary to maintain and preserve structures and functions of the body like muscles, heart, liver and kidneys. Protein also protects lean mass in a calorie deficit, keeping your metabolism running strong and assisting in better physical results overall.
